Originally "founded" by Glenn Brooks (bass, vocals), Steve Robbins (piano, keyboards) and Rahmlee Davis (trumpet), the VLB Collective has recently expanded its membership to include Buddy Williams (drums), Stephen Foster (drums) and Vern Waldron (piano, vocals).




Glenn Brooks (bass, vocals), the original founder of the VLB Collective, is a music man for all seasons. His musical background [since age ten] includes church solos and choirs, school bands, chorus and orchestras. He was a member of his undergrad college (Monmouth College) bagpipers' band playing the bagpipes. He sang with an R&B group in the Air Force touring with stars like the O'Jays, the Duke of Earl and Rufus Thomas. He also sang backup for a young Linda Ronstadt.

Moving to Southern California, Glenn served in accompanying bands playing bass for Etta James, The Fifth Dimension, O.C. Smith, Billy Preston, The Marvelettes and Latin legend Willie Bobo, to name a few. Glenn also formed the "Brooks Brothers Band", with his drummer brother, Chris. Notable alumni of this band include Victor Pontoja, Rahmlee Davis, Gerald Albright and Justo Amerio.

Glenn is also a member of the Sage Jazz Combo, which also includes pianist/vocalist Vern Waldron and Steve Robbins on keyboards.


Rahmlee Michael Davis (trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer), a Chicago native, recorded early in his career as a studio musician with such labels as Brunswick, Chess, Dakar, Curtom, Columbia and Capitol Records. Rahmlee‘s versatility and technical virtuousity as well as his unique musical style have made him extremely sought after as a performer both in the studio and in live appearances.

Rahmlee has recorded and performed live with such notable artists as: Earth, Wind & Fire, Phil Collins, The Jacksons, Tyrone Davis, Frida (of ABBA), Jackie Wilson, The Whispers, Michael Jackson, Stanley Turrentine, The Sylvers, Side Effect, B.B. King, The Chi-Lites, Tupac Shakur, Curtis Mayfield, Snoop Dogg, Donny Hathaway, Ramsey Lewis, Minnie Ripperton, Philip Bailey, The Emotions, Macy Gray, Bobby Womack, Al McKay & The L.A. All Stars/The Earth, Wind & Fire Experience and countless others. Stephen Foster (drums) is a musician whose musical style and versatility has enabled him to play in Jazz, R&B, Latin, Blues, Fusion, Smooth or Be-Bop Jazz groups. Stephen has worked or recorded with such artists as; James Ingram, Gerald Albright, Roy Ayers, Ricky Minor (Tonight Show Band & American Idol), Jimmy McGriff, Phil Upchurch, Dazz Band, Wilton Felder, Billy Mitchell, Rahmlee Michael Davis and Beloyd Taylor of Earth Wind & Fire, Sonny Stitt, Teddy Lee Hooker, Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Smith, Marlena Shaw....and many others. His songwriting and production skills are featured on a CD produced for a band called Second Wind entitled "Secret of Forever" released on the Positone label and featured legendary guitarist Phil Upchurch and singer songwriter Linda Lee. Originally from New York City, Steve Robbins (piano, keyboards, arrangements) was very active as a New York-based studio musician & arranger from the mid-70's thru the mid-to-late 80's, appearing on recordings with a wide variety of Artists including Robert Palmer, Irene Cara, Vicki Sue Robinson, Melba Moore, Evelyn "Champagne"King, Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, Special EFX, and Sting, among many others. During his years in New York, Steve was also featured in live performances with various Jazz, Fusion, R&B, and Pop Artists, including Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, and jazz legend Elvin Jones, also appearing on extended concert tours with Ashford & Simpson, jazz-fusion violinist Michal Urbaniak, jazz-fusion group Special EFX, and pop artists Irene Cara and Robert Palmer. Since relocating to Los Angeles in the late '80's, Steve has performed live and in the studio with Brothers Johnson, Jim Messina, Side Effect, Rahmlee Davis and others, as well as serving as musical director for several years for singer Irene Cara. He has also released a solo album on TallTree Records entitled "Emerald Dance."

In addition to his work with The Very Live Band, Steve is also a member of the Sage Jazz Combo, also featuring pianist Vern Waldron and bassist Glenn Brooks. He is currently working on several other CD projects, including his latest solo CD and a salsa-jazz collaboration CD with trumpeter Rahmlee Davis.


Vern Waldron (piano, vocals) hails from Brooklyn, New York. He majored in music at the University of Washington and received a Masters in Music from the Manhattan School of Music. Vern furthered his musical studies in orchestration and composition with the renowned Lyle Murphy (one of the great teachers of advanced music theory, with pupils including Ray Brown, Buddy Colette, and the great Oscar Peterson). Vern has performed with jazz greats such as Sam Most, Eugene Wright and Red Holloway, as well as with blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon and guitarists John Collins and Peter White. He served as music director for for the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera Production of "Rick's Cafe American" (Casablanca). He has also done a considerable amount of scoring for films and television, including composing the music for 10 episodes of "California Stories", a KCET-TV/28 & Armand Hammer Production and the music for the Emmy Award-winning documentaries "Saucers" & "Dr. Armand Hammer Archives Reel".


Buddy Williams (drums) started playing professionally at the age of eight. A native New Yorker, Buddy attended the prestigious High School of Music and Art (along with other such notables as Noel Pointer, Tom Browne, Dave Valentine, Marcus Miller and Bernard Wright) and the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Buddy's performance credits list like a 'Who's Who' of the music industry. His virtuosity and unique style has been utilized in recording and touring with the best...Tom Browne, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Regina Bell, The Manhattan Transfer, Al Jerreau, Bob James, Peobo Bryson, The GRP All-Stars, Saidah Garrett, Jeffrey Osborn, Ernie Watts, Hugh Masakela, Richard Tee, Chaka Khan, Nancy Wilson, George Duke, Dave Valentine, David Sanborn, Bette Midler, Stanley Turrentine, Noel Pointer, Angela Bofill, Ashford & Simpson, Herb Alpert, Linda Ronstadt, Sadao Watanabe, Michael Franks, Nat Adderley Sr. & Jr., Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Anita Baker, Leslie Uggams, Lena Horne, etc. In addition to his work with The Very Live Band and other jazz acts, Buddy currently tours with Herbie Mann's 40th Year Reunion Band, Tnia Maria, George Benson, Roberta Flack and Patti Austin.
